Batanoncak , Mas, Ubud, Bali, Indonesia 7th son from total of 12 brothers and sisters From IB Sutarja and IA Madri Mask Carver IB Sutarja The process of Mask Carving: First, I have to choose the wood for carving, there are few woods to choose from for carving like Pute wood, sandat wood, waru wood and so on. The wood/material has to be wet by soaking in the water and then have to be dry. In the process of making the mask, I already had an idea what kind of mask that I am going to carve and what kind of wood that I am going to use. It will take 2 to 3 weeks to complete one mask, it is depend on my inspiration which match my idea in my mind. I sand and dry the mask by sun light after finish carving the mask. I have my imagination also on the color of the mask and sometime my mind is completely blank and trying to figure out the color that I should use. In coloring the mask, I combine both traditional and modern design and it is depend on my inspiration and time. This process will take 2 to 3 weeks. For the finishing touch, I protect the paint by using some kind paint sealant or polish. For the mask accessories, it is depend on variation. I can use cow skin and hair or hair from the horses. |
